Route 49 is a
major east-west artery in southern New Jersey that provides a summer
shore route. The existing Route 49 bridge over the Cohansey River
was constructed in 1936.
Presently, the
bridge is classified (by the NJDOT) as structurally deficient due to the
poor condition of its superstructure. It is also functionally
obsolete with substandard lane widths and no shoulders.
The bridge
replacement project is expected to take 18 months. It will replace
the existing bridge with a new three-span steel structure. In
addition, the project will improve roadway safety and traffic operations
by:
-
Improving geometry
-
Increasing lane widths, including 15-foot lanes for
bicycle traffic
-
Upgrading traffic signals and intersection lighting
-
Replacing drainage system
-
Replacing deteriorating sidewalks
-
Providing ADA compliant pedestrian crossings
