The Public Works department has responsibility for various functions within a number of divisions. This department is commonly referred to as the city's "work horse". It is called upon to perform various tasks for all city departments as well as directly for its citizens. The Public Works department is responsible for the following activities:

  • Maintain and repair all public streets, culverts, and drains within the city.

  • Undertake new road construction, and road resurfacing projects.

  • Maintain all city streets in a clean and safe condition.

  • Snow and ice removal

  • Install, operate, repair, and maintain street traffic signs and paint control signals.

  • City owned motor vehicle maintenance.

  • Maintain city owned public parking lots.

  • Regulate the construction and repair of sidewalks.

  • Supervise the administration of street lighting.

  • Supervise the Convenience Center.

  • Ensure solid waste & recyclable collection contract requirements are met on a weekly basis.

  • Supervise the 1100-acre city park.

  • Maintain the city owned recreational fields.

  • Provide maintenance and janitorial services for the city's public buildings.

  • Perform flood damage control and cleanup for all rivers, streams, waterfronts within the city.
