Public Works - Streets & Roads Division

The Division of Streets & Roads is responsible to maintain the city's streets whose total length extends for 49 miles. Within the city the county is responsible for 20 miles of streets, and the state controls 4.5 miles.  The total extent of the road system is 73.5 miles.

The State roads are N.J. Route 49 & Route 77, which are major arteries leading into and out of the city. The county services most of the major collector streets, which pass through the City to adjoining municipalities.
The majority of local streets come under the City's jurisdiction

Streets & Roads Division Responsibilities:

  • Maintain all city streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, bridges, culverts and drains in a clean and safe condition, free of
      obstructions and hazards (remove snow & ice, repair as required).
  • Manage and care for all public park lands, lakes, streams, rivers, and other park facilities.
  • Undertake new road construction, and road resurfacing, projects
  • Install, operate, maintain, and repair street traffic signs, lines and markers and paint control signals.
  • Provide for the storage, servicing, repair, and maintenance of city-owned non-emergency motor vehicles.
  • Operate, maintain and repair city-owned public parking area and facilities.
  • Supervise the administration of division related contracts, conduct traffic engineering & street lighting studies, and
      prepare recommendations, plans & programs with respect thereto.

Leaf and Brush Collection (Ordinance 88-20)

Municipal districts (5) have been established for the purpose of leaves, small brush, and tree limb collection. A map of these districts is available at the Public Works Main Office.  Call 455-3230, x279 to request a map by mail, or if you have any leaf & brush pickup related questions.

  • All grass clippings must be placed in clear plastic bags to be picked up on your regular trash day - NO yellow sticker is required.

  • Loose Leaves ONLY
All Year Round
(During the 1st & 3rd Monday of the month)
  • By Appointment ONLY
  • Brush & Limbs (less than 30 Lbs or not to exceed 6" diameter)
  • NO Logs, Stumps
Items NOT taken
  • Roots
  • Limbs over 6" in diameter

No item for collection can be placed at curbside before the Saturday prior to the scheduled collection day.

Making A Brush & Limb Appointment (All Year Round)

  • Call 455-3230, x279 to make an appointment (Mon - Fri, 8:30am - 3:30pm).
  • If you get a recording, leave your last name, address, and a phone number where you may be reached
  • Someone from the Public Works office will return your call and confirm your pickup.

Brush & Limb Pickup

  • - After your pickup has been confirmed, place your brush and limbs curbside the night before your pick up day.
  • - Please note that your pickup may be rescheduled due to inclement weather, under-scheduling, etc.
  • - It is very important that you DO NOT place your trash out UNTIL your pickup is CONFIRMED (why we need a valid contact phone number).

Kid’s Fest

The official Spring/Summer season
kick-off event at the Cohanzick Zoo. Kid’s Fest 2007 served over 2,700 people! This annual event is Admission free and provides a welcoming environment for families in our surrounding area. Kid’s Fest offers a variety of cost free entertainment throughout the day.

Competition Auditions

This 2nd Annual music competition will be accepting entry forms until May 10th.  The finalists in the competition will play at the Fourth of July Festival, with the winners being decided by public casting votes.
