Water & Sewer Department

Initially started in 1877 and then known as the Bridgeton Water Works, the department was considered at the time to be quite elaborate as it covered the entire city with 7 miles of pipe, 37 stop valves and 53 fire hydrants.

Active from that point to the present, the Bridgeton Water & Sewer Department is today responsible for maintaining 88 miles of water and sewer lines throughout the community. Counting 9 active wells, 2 radium treatment plants, and 2 storage tanks under their charge, the Water Department provides an average of 2.5 million gallons of water to Bridgeton's residential, commercial and industrial customers. During the summer months, when water usage is at its peak, that number can go as high as 5.5 million gallons. On the other side of the ledger, the Sewer department maintains 7 sewage pumping stations to serve all corners of the community.

As a matter of course, the Bridgeton Water & Sewer Department adheres to strict water-testing regulations established by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. Beyond compliance with these strict health and safety standards; the department is dedicated to best practices within the industry and toward that end, yearly consumer confidence reports are sent to customers as part of that process.

Meter Information

The City of Bridgeton provides a standard 5/8" radio-read meter to all residential customers at no cost. Meters over 5/8" are available at a reduced cost and customers can contact the Water Department for specific pricing information.

Second meters (5/8") for measuring outside water usage are also available to customers. However, all required plumbing installations must be complete with necessary permits, inspections, and approvals in place before a second meter will be installed. While a second meter is not for everyone; it is ideal for the customer who routinely waters garden and lawn areas, or tends to a swimming pool, fountain or other outdoor amenity requiring water usage.
